Nice Electronica from Sonanaut

A couple of nights ago my son called me from his car (put down the phone, and drive!), wanting me to listen to a song. I tuned in the station and found it in the middle of the program “Musical Starstreams,” a fun program of electronic music, mainly.
There, I heard “Sonanaut” and immediately went to Emusic to see if they had it. Sure enough they did, and I downloaded the album “Sinking Upwards.”
If you’re not a lover of electronic music, the style can seem repetitious, augmented by various random sounds and tones, yet this album isn’t boring. The tracks stand out from each other, too, so listening to the whole album at a shot won’t put you to sleep, either.
The track “Judith’s Way,” in particular, is more an ambient jazz tune, with a bass riff coming in about one-third the way thru. It wouldn’t be a bad track to use for improvisation practice, for you players.
“Carbon” changes things, being an up-tempo number. An acoustic guitar solo adds a nice touch. I was happy to read, on the Sonanaut website, that it really is a guitar, not a synth.
I enjoyed every track, pleasantly surprised over and over again by the tastiness, the variety, and the musicality. I wouldn’t expect to use the word “groove” with much ambient music, but there it was. Then another track was a lush blend that caressed the senses and floated me away. Some ethereal vocal sounds added some sonorous touches, as well.
Thanks, Sonanaut, for a satisfying, 11 track vacation.
